USING YOUR IRRIGATION CONTROLLER
Your irrigation controller is one of the most important tools for maintaining a healthy landscape while conserving water. Fortunately, you don't need to be a professional to use it correctly.
With just a few simple adjustments, you can reduce water use, lower your bill and stay in compliance with local watering restrictions.
Quick Start: The 3 Most Important Settings
1. Water on the correct days
Make sure your controller is set to your assigned watering days based on your address and current water restrictions.
2. Set proper run times (minutes per zone)
Recommended Zone Run Time Table
3. Check your start times
You typically only need ONE start time
-
Multiple start times = watering multiple times per day (a very common mistake)
Understanding Your Controller
Programs (A, B, C)
Think of programs as separate schedules:
-
Most homes only need Program A
-
Programs B and C are often unused, but can accidentally be turned on.
With just a few simple adjustments, you can reduce water use, lower your bill and stay in compliance with local watering restrictions.
Start Times vs Run Times
This is where many irrigation issues occur:
-
Start Time = when watering begins
-
Run Time = how long each zone runs
If you set multiple start times, your entire system will run multiple times.
Example:
3 start times = your lawn gets watered 3 times in one day
Zones
Each zone controls a different area of your yard:
-
Lawn areas
-
Flower beds
-
Shrubs
Each zone should have its own run time based on plant needs.
